Audio doesn't work on Instagram - what to do
Instagram is an excellent platform for posting video content. However, users sometimes encounter the problem that their audio does not work on Instagram, even if they try to use the volume keys, tap the crossed-out speaker and open the video. This situation can be frustrating because it prevents you from enjoying the content on your channel on Instagram.
Fortunately, in most cases this is a fairly easy problem to fix. If you're having problems with audio not working on Instagram, let's take a look at the steps you can take to fix it.
Note that certain videos or stories do not contain sound. If this is the case, you will see a "Video has no sound" tag in the lower left corner.
How to fix audio that doesn't work on Instagram
1. check Bluetooth headphones/earphones to make sure they work
The lack of sound on Instagram may be related to Bluetooth headphones or earbuds, even if you don't wear them. For example, if Apple AirPods have "Automatic ear detection" turned off, the sound will be routed to the earbuds whether they are in your ear or not, as long as they are paired with your iPhone.
A similar problem occurs with many wireless speakers. The volume of the speaker is muted, you forget to disconnect it from your smartphone, or the sound goes to another device.
Here's how to fix it:
- Go to Bluetooth smartphone menu, check the paired speakers/headphones and tap the device to disconnect them.
2 Restart the device
Restarting the device can often reload processes that were not working properly. This action can solve sound problems.
To determine if this is the case, restart the smartphone to eliminate errors and unnecessary files that may be preventing audio playback.
Keep one of the volume rockers and the side button at the same time for iPhone X and newer until you see the power slider. Move the slider to turn off the phone, then press and hold the side button and release it when the Apple logo appears.
For older iPhones (iPhone 8 and older): hold down the side/top button to display the power slider. After turning off the smartphone, press the side/top button again to turn it back on.
For Android: Press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power options appear, then tap restart or reboot. If you are using a newer Android phone, you may need to hold down the volume and power buttons to restart the device.
3. update Instagram
Instagram frequently releases updates and bug fixes that resolve various issues in the app. In the past, many users have reported problems playing music in stories or playing audio at all. In this situation, you need to check for an update.
- Start the App Store or Play Store, go to Updates Or My apps and gamesand swipe through the list to find Instagram.
- Hit Update button next to the app, and Instagram will confirm that the latest version is installed.
4. update iOS/Android operating system
If your phone's operating system software is out of date, you may encounter problems when using various apps, including Instagram. Here's a quick guide to iOS/Android software updates.
For iOS:
- Beginning Settingstap Generaland select Software update.
- Obtain "Download and install" and wait a few minutes for the iPhone to update. You may be prompted to confirm that you want to install the software. In this case, tap install Or OK In a pop-up window.
For Android:
- Click the cogwheel icon to access Settingsenter System menu and select About the phone.
If you use Samsung Galaxyyou should look for Software updates Instead of System. On Pixel smartphones, you have to tap Advanced instead of Phone Info. Either way, you should easily find the Download and Install option.
5. check Detector down for Instagram failure
Several users responded to our article in the same time frame, stating that they had a sound problem that lasted for several days. While not affecting everyone, mass outages are easy to detect using the Detector down.
- Visit the site and type "Instagram" in the search box.
In this step, you will find out if other people have the same problem as you, and reduce the time for troubleshooting. If there is a huge problem, you can report it on Instagram or wait. If not, continue troubleshooting or report it on Instagram.
6. check the equipment
Has your smartphone been dipped in liquid recently? Have you dropped it? If so, a hardware problem may be preventing your phone from playing audio.
To test this, try playing audio in other apps, such as YouTube, SoundCloud or Spotify, and make sure the volume is set to maximum. Hopefully, you will be able to hear the sound from the built-in speakers.
If not, try cleaning the speakers with a toothbrush or soft-bristled toothbrush. Assuming that doesn't work, you may need to take your phone to a repair shop to replace the speakers.
8. clear Instagram cache
Clearing the Instagram app may solve the problem. This basically clears the saved data, just like restoring the app. You can always delete and reinstall the app on your phone, but clearing the cache is a simple solution to try:
For Android:
- Access your phone's "Settings" and tap "Applications", "Application Manager," Or "Apps and Notifications, Depending on the Android version.
- Get "See all ### applications". In older versions of Android, go to the next step.
- Scroll down and tap "Instagram".
- Choose "Storage and Cache." In older versions of Android, tap "Storage".
- Tap "Clear cache".
The above steps will not delete any information in the application, although you may need to log in again after clearing the cache.
For iphones:
Unfortunately, iPhone users must delete the app to clear the cache. You can either long-press the app icon until it starts to move, and click "X" to confirm or go through the settings.
- Go to your iPhone Settings menu and tap on General.
- Tap "Storage" Or "iPhone memory, depending on the iOS version.
- Scroll down and select "Instagram" Application.
- Then tap Delete the application. You must confirm the deletion.
After completing the above process, you can go back to the App Store and reinstall the app. Make sure you have your iCloud password to download and your Instagram login credentials.
9. check your phone's settings
Finally, there is one more thing you can check - your sounds. Both iOS and Android have separate settings for distributing sound through your phone. Of course, you've probably tried turning up the volume, but it's not unusual (especially after a system update) that your sounds may be directed to the wrong speaker. For example, if your phone is routed to a handset, you probably won't hear it.
- open "Settings" on your phone and type "Sounds." in the search box (iOS users must open "Settings" and scroll down slightly to display this field).
- After selecting the options, review the relevant ones. For example, "Accessibility" on both operating systems can spoil the sound. Make sure all sounds are turned on.
- Then try switching from right to left speaker or move the bar to the middle to use both. If you have a friend nearby who doesn't have the problem, take a look at their settings and update yours to match.
Unfortunately, there are many reasons why audio may stop working on Instagram. Fortunately, you now know the best solutions if your audio doesn't work on Instagram.
