What to know

  • On Facebook.com, select down arrow > Settings and privacy > Settings > Privacy.
  • Find How people find you and contact you section to customize your profile search settings.
  • In the app, tap Menu > Settings and privacy > Settings > How people find you and contact you.

This article explains how to change your Facebook privacy settings to limit the number of people who can search for you using your email address, phone number and even a Google search of your name.

Currently, there is no privacy setting to prevent your profile information from displaying in Facebook search results. So if someone searches for you by typing in your name or additional personal information they may know in the Facebook search box, your profile may still display.

How to limit searches of your Facebook profile using your email address, phone number and search engines

You can customize your privacy settings from Facebook.com in your web browser or via the Facebook mobile app. Here's how to control who can find you online:

  1. In the upper right corner, select down arrow and select Settings and privacy.

  2. From the drop-down menu, select Settings.

  3. From the menu on the left, select Privacy.

  4. Scroll down to How people find you and contact you Section. You can customize the following search settings:

    • Who can search for you using the email address you provided? Select Friends, Friends of Friends or Just Me to limit this type of search.
    • Who can search for you using the phone number provided? Select Friends, Friends of Friends or Just Me to limit this type of search.
    • Do you want search engines outside of Facebook to link to your profile? Choose Edit and mark Allow search engines outside of Facebook to link to your profile.

If you turn off allowing search engines outside of Facebook to link to your profile, you may have to wait a while for it to take effect. Your profile may still be visible to search engines for some time after you turn off this setting.

Control your privacy settings with the Facebook app

You can also control who can find your profile from within the Facebook app:

  1. From the bottom menu (iOS) or top menu (Android), tap Menu Icon.

  2. Get Settings and privacy.

  3. Get Settings.

  4. Scroll down to Audience and visibility section and tap How people find you and contact you.

  5. Tap one of the options to set privacy preferences.

Block searches for professional reasons

If the same email address or phone number you use for your Facebook account is frequently used for, say, professional purposes, you may want to prevent any professional contacts from finding you on Facebook. This may be especially true if you use Facebook primarily for personal reasons and don't want to receive friend invitations from your friends.

Block privacy searches

Similarly, if you are an online influencer or a well-known person, you don't want to receive Facebook friend invitations or messages from people you don't know. If your public email address or phone number is linked to your Facebook account, or if your Facebook profile can be easily found on search engines, make it easier for fans and observers to contact you through your Facebook profile.

Even if neither of the two scenarios described above applies to you, it may be a good idea to restrict Facebook's search capabilities as an additional privacy precaution in case someone tries to search for you using your email address, phone number, Google or another search engine.

Facebook regularly changes the way it protects and shares personal information, often without prior notice. It's up to you, the user, to make sure your Facebook search settings are set at a level of privacy and security that suits you.

Recommended: Limit the number of people who can send you friend invitations

If you are serious about preventing strangers or unwanted people from sending you friend invitations, you may want to consider blocking people who are not mutual friends of your current friends from doing so.

You can do this from the same section where you adjusted the above privacy settings (under How people find you and contact you Under Privacy/Privacy Settings). Change Who can send you friend invitations z All To Friends of friends.

So if you show up in Facebook search results when someone you don't know searches for your name or other personal information, they won't be able to send you a friend invitation unless they are already friends with at least one of your friends .
